Air Force Emergency Egress Careers

The Air Force maintains a specialty called Emergency Egress Careers. This is a job that is responsible for making sure that all aircraft and equipment emergency escape devices are operational and in excellent running order. As an Air Force Egress Aircrew Apprentice you will be responsible for making sure that the different systems that are present in each aircraft work every time. Working as an Emergency Egress Specialist you will work to make sure that the safety and security of the crew of an aircraft is protected. You will be taught the basics of each type of emergency escape systems used on the aircraft found in today?s Air Force. Egress devices provide an escape in an emergency.

Part of your training will be in training to learn how to use and operate different systems that flight personnel use to escape an aircraft that is about to crash or explode. Before you are assigned to an egress maintenance group, you will learn how to diagnose and repair the different various items used on survival and escape systems. One of the main escape systems is the military Jet Fighter ejection seat. The training will teach you how to fix and locate problems, and troubleshoot issues in escape capsules, escape hatches, ejection seats, as well as other types of escape systems. It is designed to rescue the pilot and navigator or other aircrew in an emergency situation. Dealing with specific Aircraft requires instruction in the operation and maintenance procedures for each type of escape system. There are several types of explosive devices that power and allow the escape devices to function. You will be trained on this type of ejection system has been developed over a long period of time and work reliably to ensure Air Crew safety. You will train on shoulder harnesses, canopies, warning lights, lap belts, oxygen systems and other emergency devices. You will work directly on ejection seats that fire out of an aircraft or jet fighter. Once the ejection seat is out of the aircraft a parachute automatically deploys, and the aircrew member is able to return to earth safely.

The ejection seat is equipped with a rocket motor that fires and propels the pilot out of the aircraft.
