Air National Guard: Common Career Questions

September 6, 2011 By admin

Those who are interested in joining the Military often times overlook the Air National Guard. This could be one of the biggest mistakes you ever make. While this branch of the military is not the right choice for everybody, many have found that it is just what they are looking for.

The Air National Guard is part of each state?s National Guard, as well as a branch of the Air Force.

Do you believe that nobody is interested in the Air National Guard? Think again. There are more than 106,000 active personnel in the Air Guard.

How long is training?

Since the Air National Guard is part of the Air Force, you are required to attend Basic Training upon enlisting. Along with this, you must attend a technical school that offers courses related to the career you are interested in.

Generally speaking, Basic Training lasts approximately 8.5 weeks with your stint at a technical school ranging from six weeks to a full year.

I want to join the Air National Guard but am also interested in attending college. Is tuition assistance available?

Through the Air National Guard you may qualify for the Montgomery G.I. Bill. This provides you with up to $333/month based on the courses you are taking. Along with this, the Montgomery G.I. Bill Kicker is another possibility. This could potentially add $350/month to your stipend.

Note: some states offer 100 percent tuition assistance. Speak with your local recruiter for more information on how the Air National Guard can help you pay for college.

Does the Air Guard offer additional education benefits for those in the health profession?

In short, the answer is yes. Of course, you need to learn more about each program to determine which one you are eligible for. The most popular programs include: Student Loan Repayment Program (up to $50,000); Stipend Program, which pays $1,235 month; and the Montgomery G.I. Bill Program.

Once you speak with a member of the Health Professions Recruiting Team you will get a better idea of which program(s) you are eligible for.

How do I choose the right job?

It is important to work one-on-one with your local recruiter to choose the career path that is best for you. Once you make a decision, your choice is written into your enlistment contract. If you need help, don?t be shy about asking your recruiter and/or family members.

Am I eligible to join the Air National Guard?

Before you do anything you must determine your eligibility. You are required to have a high school diploma or GED, pass a background check, pass a medical screening, and be between the ages of 17 and 30. Along with this, passing the entrance exam is a must. This is known as the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery. Finally, you must be a legal resident ? some states require that you are a U.S. citizen.

These five questions are closely related to enlisting in the Air National Guard and choosing the career path that is best for you.

I really want to be in the armed forces, but unfortunatley due to some poor school decisions, i think im held back from doin so,but i am a cerified welder too. I understand the national guard has a GED plus program, and i was wondering if the air national guard has one also, if not could i go to the GED plus program for the guard and possibly still attend the air national guard?
