They work to perform deck maintenance, seamanship, navigation, search and rescue, and supervising personnel assigned to the deck force of a ship. It is a rating that has expert seamanship knowledge and operation of various seamanship and deck tasks on board ship. It is a rating specialty that is vital to the mission and performance of the Active Duty Coast Guard, especially since September 11th, 2001.
