Coast Guard Education Funding Support

July 17, 2008 By admin

The Coast Guard has a proud tradition of offering support for their Servicemembers. Through the Coast Guard you can get support for obtaining an education, and various types of funding.
The Coast Guard offered programs that are unique and only offered by them. Some of them have elements similar to other service military programs, but many are unique to the Coast Guard. These programs include:

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance –Coast Guard MA is a educational funding program that provides military supported educational loan options, but they are loans, and they have to be paid back at some point in the future. It also gives various tests that are given at no cost such as CLEP, DANTES and others. This is a program that the local CG educational officer at your station can give you more information.

Admiral Roland Guaranteed Student Loan- This is a program named after a famous Admiral, and it is a version of guaranteed Stafford loan that is only available to Servicemembers from the Coast Guard Active Duty, Reserves, their spouses and dependents. It has an annual deadline of March 15th every year.
Servicemember Opportunity College Training Degree- This is a family educational program available to the United States Coast Guard, US Navy and United States Marine Corps. It is offered for the Servicemembers, their families and dependents. It provides help attending Universities and colleges that offer associate degrees and bachelor degree programs. Despite sharing it with the Marine Corps and the Navy, some of the provisions, institutions and locations are uniquely intended for the spouses, dependants, and families of US Coast Guard Servicemembers, and the Servicemembers themselves. There is no residency requirement for most of the SOCCOAST degree programs, and this is good in that it supports distance-learning opportunities. You can literally attend online different Universities and College programs from anywhere in the world. As part of the agreement in being involved in the SOCCOAST program, each college and university program involved agree to transfers credits and accept classes from any of the others institutions involved in the programs.
