Computer Engineer USCG Careers

The Coast Guard is a service that used computer services profusely. The Computer Engineer and Computer Control Officer specialty for the Coast Guard is the position dealing with Information technology and Computer engineering issues. It covers all of the communications, computer, and electronic and digital systems in effect in the Coast Guard. While the billet of Coast Guard Information Technology Officer has several specialties, the Coast Guard Computer Information Engineer is the officer tasked to maintain the Computer information and electronic information systems.

Information Technology and Computers is an evolving specialty, there is so much new in the field and it is a specialty that is new, and evolving each year. Each new decade brings huge advances to the field, and the person who is a Computer information Technology Engineer officer in the Coast Guard has to keep abreast of all the different technology and changes that occur within the field. The Computer Engineer in the Coast Guard is the person who is responsible to implement, validate, maintain, configure, test and manage computer systems, computer networks and computer information technology systems. They can be required to work with both normal standard and non-standard types of systems to insure compatibility.

The job of Coast Guard Computer Information Technology engineer is one that works with databases, and computers to make sure that the information technology and computer needs of the Coast Guard are being met. Tasks include design, systems analysis and troubleshooting, network administration and design, and overall systems integration. This is an officer career for the person with significant prior experience, at a minimum a four-year degree in computer information technology with an emphasis in hardware and software specialty is required. You have to be trained before you enter this position, while some of your job training will occur on the job, there is not really a training program per se for this job specialty.

Job candidates for this position are encouraged to continue their education outside of the service with a special emphasis on computer technology. The Coast Guard Information Technology Management program sends some of the Computer Engineers each year to advanced studies to earn their master’s degrees to better service the needs of the Coast Guard. There is some advanced US Coast Guard Computer Science and Software Systems Engineering courses under development to further supply trained advanced personnel for this job specialty in the Coast Guard.
