Iraqi Security Forces Work To Assume Security Lead
There are a number of different operations that are being performed on a weekly basis in and around Diyala, in support of the overall security of the province. The current effort to clear the last insurgents and terror cell representatives from Diyala is an Iraq conceived, Iraqi led mission that has been successful. The leadership in the Diyala region is all led by Iraqi forces, and this has been a gradual change from coalition leadership.
As the coalition has been successful in training members of the Iraq forces, they have been able to transition out from being central and lead, to being a support type force. This has been an overall positive thing, and one that the coalition is very comfortable with.
The Iraqi Army and the Iraqi National police are mounting missions, and working to attack terrorists and insurgents where they live. They are discovering on their own different outlaw groups, as well as Iran back special operations soldiers that have tried to create havoc.
The operation that was started on July 29 is a good example of the type of thing that the police and Iraq Army has began.
They travel out into the community and conduct random house to house searches, and because they are clad in bold security uniforms and members of the local community, determining who is a terrorist and who belongs in the often single family dwellings is a lot easier.
