Educational Merchant Marine Program

June 17, 2008 By admin

There are a lot of opportunities available for people that want to receive training in college or university classes, but one of the most interesting training programs is the Merchant Marine Academy. We are a nation that has water all the way around it in one form or another, in addition to inland lakes, rivers and waterways. We have a great deal of services and goods as well as different types of consumer items that are transported and shipped around the nation. A great deal of the nations supplies is shipped over water at one point or another. The transportation is aboard ships or vessels, and this is especially true of items shipped from the gulf coast to either the west coast or east coast.

There is additionally a lot of shipping on the Great Lakes, taking goods and services to our friends and neighbors to the north, Canada. Each of these vessels needs trained crewmembers and officers capable of navigation and shipping, and many of these personnel are trained at the Merchant Marine Program in New York. The Merchant Marine Educational Academy is a four year program that is ran in New York, where a person can receive a four year training college degree, and receives training on how to operate as a crewmember or officer aboard one of the many vessels that ply United States Waters. You will receive training on how to become a vessel officer, or vessel crewmember, and at the end of four years you will have a college degree, and receive a commission in the United States Merchant Marine program. You will be taught Marine ship management, Marine Engineering, Shipboard and Marine vessel training applications, as well as other types of training. You will receive training in shipboard operations, Marine Engineering, Vessel Transportation and Navigation, and other shipping operations and logistics training.

The program is located at Kings Point, Long Island New York and it is the premier center of Marine shipping education in the United States. It focuses training to educate and teach people to become shipboard officers, leaders and crew to serve in the Maritime Merchant Marine Transportation field. Vessels are served and operated by the US Merchant Marine fleet, and during a time of national emergency or wartime the vessels that are maintained and operated by the Merchant Marine are used to supply our military efforts overseas. It becomes a main strategic element that is crucial to the overall national security of the United States.
