Emergency Medical Travel Benefits

March 18, 2008 By admin

There are a lot of things that being in the Military allows a person to do. Travel, to see the world, as well as first class benefits of pay, housing and medical support. But there are sometimes hidden benefits for members of the military that do not get as much attention. One of these benefits is the Veterans Angel Flight program. The Veterans Angel Flight program was started to benefit Veterans, Servicemembers, and their dependants, when they have a situation where they need to transport themselves or a loved one a long distance for medical care. There were a number of times when different Veterans found themselves in need of medical care a long distance from their home, but did not have the resources or the financial ability to travel to the care they need.

So the Angel Flight Program was created. It is a low cost, or zero cost program for Veterans, and their dependants to access transportation to get to medical care. Sometimes surgery or treatment for a longstanding illness necessitates travel that can literally be thousands of miles. Patients who have medical reasons to travel, who are veterans or related to veterans, are eligible for the Angel Flight program. It is expressly for patients needing medical care a long distance away, for patients needing surgery or specialized care a great distance from their home.

Veterans Angel Flight missions are flown by pilots who volunteer their time and donate their planes, and fuel to help out in the transportation needs of Veteran’s and dependants needing travel for medical reasons. It was established for Veterans who have to travel to distant medical Centers, facilities or hospitals for specialized health care.

The stated mission of Veterans Angel Flight is that no Veteran who is financially needy or their family members who are without resources be denied access to necessary Travel. They can now access travel for medical reasons. If a Veteran or their dependant needs evaluation, diagnosis, surgery, treatment, or even rehabilitation at a facility that is distant then the idea is that now the Veteran can access these services using Veterans Angel Flight.

Patients are encouraged to try and seek assistance from all sources at their disposal, and to register with the National Patient Travel Center. Often times there may be another method at their fingertips, without using Veteran’s Angel Flight. But if not, then it is a benefit that many people are not aware of. Veteran’s Angel Flight assists hundreds of veterans every year, serving and helping out quietly in the background.
