Food Service US Navy Specialists

September 12, 2008 By admin

The position of US Navy food specialist or Navy mess specialist has changed a lot over the last two decades. In the old days, the food at military installations had a very bad reputation, and in many ways it was warranted. The quality of the food featured at military installations in the modern Navy is greatly improved over the food served in days gone by. As a Navy Food Specialist you will be able to perform tasks and duties required to successfully serve food to many different people.

The United States Navy serves thousands of meals every day at Navy facilities scattered around the world, on board ship, and underneath the sea on board Navy Submarines. As you are trained for service you will attend your Class A school where you will begin to learn about food service and food preparation. The Navy Food Service Program gives instruction and training on Food Preparation, food selection, and how to serve food, as well as food service and catering style of tasks. The training possible in the Food Service Career is ongoing, and there is a lot of different training and on the job experiences that will enrich your skills. There are a wide variety of serving and cooking tasks, including food preparation and cooking, menu selection, food management tasks that you can learn to implement. While it seems like a routine job, there are skills and training that a person gains as a US Navy enlisted mess specialist that you likely will not gain in other jobs or in either civilian or military work. Food Service personnel are assigned to every facility where Navy Personnel are stationed around the globe. The Food Service student will learn a great deal of information on recipe conversions, baking, food storage and preparation, purchasing and food supplies, as well as equipment usage and other food related and food storage tasks. Serving and enlisting in the United States Navy is a great career step for many people who want to enrich their professional lives.

The training that a person that is studying to be a Food Service Specialist receives is in hands on training and classroom instruction, to teach concepts and then give the student an opportunity to perform them. The individual FS trainee will work both as part of groups in learning how to cook and serve food, but also learn tasks as an individual. Every Navy vessel that plys the seas and that has personnel that live on board has Food Service personnel that serve aboard ship.
