Default Cleaning The Silver on the Navy Uniform

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can give me some information on cleaning the silver looking threading on the sleeves of my Dad's Navy Uniform from the 50's. My father is dying of cancer and had already gotten his unifrom together to be buried in. He mentioned something about the sleeves not being cleaned yet. I just pulled it out today and I wold like to to try to clean the threading on the sleeves without damaging it.

He also has two medals pinned on it along with his navy wings. The wings liook like they are already clean, but the two medals look like they might need to be cleaned. The look to maybe be br***, but they also could just be some metal that doesn't need to be cleaned. Any advice?

He has always had great pride that he was in the militaty and one of his final wishes is to be buried in his dres blues. I would like to get it ready to the standards he would be roud of, but I don't have the courage to mention this now to him. We don't know for sure, but we figure he has a few weeks to a few months. Can anyone tell me the proper way to clean them? Thanks

PS Sorry if I put this in the wrong forum.

Johnsdaughter, what you might want to do is contact a professional dry cleaning service and see if they have what it takes to get your dad's uniform cleaned or if they can at least give you some suggestions/ideas as to what to use on the sleeves. I think they would know best. Good luck to you!
