Mortar Teams Given Expert Instruction
Part of the ongoing training that the Iraqi Security forces are receiving includes different types of specialized training. Members of the coalition Georgian detachment has been providing specialized Mortar training for members of the Iraqi Army and National Police.
This training has been fruitful, and served to train Iraqi Soldiers in how to correctly use and fire mortar weaponry, and how to maintain and use the different mortars and ammunition. Iraqi Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 32nd Iraqi Army brigade have been receiving the training for the last five days in the specialized mortar training course.
The training program is one of the first Iraqi Army courses that have involved 60 mm mortars. Many times different mortars are gained when weapons caches are discovered, but in the past the Iraqi Army has not known how to utilize the mortars.
Now, with the training provided by the Georgian Coalition weapons teams, the different Iraqi mortars that come into their possession can be turned around and put to positive use in defending and maintaining security in the region.
The soldiers from the 1st Georgian Brigade trained close to two dozen Iraqi soldiers in the five day training course. The use and safety procedures of mortar use were covered as well as some other small arms and weaponry.
The ability to take practical information and training has been hugely beneficial to the Iraqi soldiers, and their professionalism has grown leaps and bounds in the last several weeks.
Now, they can patrol with confidence, knowing that they know the correct way to do many military and police operations.
