The United States Navy operates over the high seas around the world in defense of the United States and the rest of the world. There are many different threats each vessel encounters every day. Many of the threats come from under the water. These can be impossible to detect line of sight. It is important to have a specialist on hand with the ability to discover objects in the water through the use of sonar technology.
What You Will Do
When you work in this position, you will be expected to help in the protection of the vessel you are working on by using both electronic and physical listening devices. You will use both active and passive sonar systems to locate and identify different possible threats to the vessel. You will pass along any possible threats to those superior to you.
Get the Training
You will be able to perform your duties after you go through the basic training that all enlisted personnel go through. You may through special training depending on what kind of vessel, like a submarine, you will be serving on. You will go through A school training to learn how to use the technical equipment as well as how to listen to and identify different sounds. You will be able to decide between something being a threat and something which is not a concern to your vessel like fish or part of the environment.
