It is never easy to go into a strange land and immediately have to find out what the locals know. This is because the locals might be instantly weary about what your intentions are. This is especially true when you are talking about the United States Army. This is because not only will you be a stranger in a strange land, you will be heavily armed. This is why it is important that an expert is sent in to work with the local people.
Getting to Know the People
The very first thing a psychological operations officer will do when the unit enters a strange land is to establish contact with the locals. You will talk with those in the city and find out how they feel about you and your forces. You will then go on to establish a trust that you are there to help them. This will make it possible for you to know that you will not have to watch your backs from the locals. You may even be able to extract some intelligence.
Finding Out What They Know
Gaining intelligence is always important to successful mission. This is why the PSYOP officer will turn conversation from normal chit-chat to find out what dangers lurk around the corner for American forces. This will help to make sure that there are no surprises the intelligence for the mission gathered ahead of time did not identify.
