May 22, 2017 By larryf

Want a few little unknown facts at Air Force One? Air Force One is one of the most recognizable symbols of the American Presidency. It’s a flying monument with the duty of transporting the President to important destinations. As one of the main modes of transportation, it’s also a very vulnerable target.

The blue-and-white Boeing 747 has been heavily modified to basically become an airborne bunker for the President of the United States. It’s closely guarded by the Air Force and provides plenty of comfort during travel.

A Few Facts About Air Force One

? There are two identical planes, not one, as the title would indicate.
? After 9-11, video teleconferencing was added to allow the President to address the nation, even while flying.
? A medical annex is found on board with an appointed physician traveling at all times, a pharmacy and plenty of medical tools.
? The carpet has stars found all across the three decks of the plane.
? Two kitchens provide the ability to serve up to 100 people on board.
? The plane is waxed by hand before every mission.
? Inside the plane is a living area with beds, a private shower and bathroom, a Situation Room and a presidential office.
? Flares are hidden in the wings and used to confuse enemies if the plane is under attack.
? The total square footage of the plane is 4,000.
? The plane is as tall as a six-story building and includes three levels.
? It cost more than $200K to operate the plane for just one hour.
? All of the windows are fully armored.

While the plane may be up in the sky, many believe it’s actually safer than the White House because it’s a moving target. In addition, the level of security is very high and the Air Force goes to great lengths to ensure the plane remains safe.
