Mentoring Benefits For Navy Spouses

April 10, 2008 By admin

If you are new to the military service and married, there is a program available to wives of Navy personnel. It is called the Navy compass program, and it is based on a similar program that the United States Marine Corps has. The Marine program is called LINKS, and both programs in the Marines and Navy are similar to a third program conducted by the U.S. Army. It is available to both wives, or in some cases husbands of Navy active duty personnel. Spouses of military Servicemembers often face a confusing level of information, requirements and real life situations that can be bewildering. They are expected to know how to react when confronted with a variety of issues, situations and circumstances.

Often they do not know what is expected, and this causes chaos in the personal and family lives of Navy Servicemembers. So, there is a program specifically designed to help give some relief.
The Navy Compass Spouse Mentor program is specifically created to help Navy spouses adjust to what life in the Navy is all about. It is available to all Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps personnel who live in the area served by the local group. In some cases Army and Air Force spouses are eligible to attend also, it depends on the policies of the local group.

This is a program that has been proven effective for spouses of Servicemembers to learn and get to know in a non-threatening, supportive environment all about what military service life entails. The meetings, which make up the mentor program help match new military spouses with another, more experienced military spouses in a one to one mentoring arrangement. The program also meets as a group on a regular basis, for classes and meetings to help explain any questions that new spouses may have regarding military life, and what it means to be a family member of someone serving in the military.

The Navy Compass program is designed to function in sessions, each session or cycle runs for 12 hours. It can be structured in several ways, but normally is in four classes of three hours duration. Topics included in each cycle include military history, Navy customs and traditions, military ranks and ratings, military rights and responsibilities, and other such subjects.
