Military Families Beware: Money Saving Discounts For Veterans

February 27, 2008 By admin

There are a great many services and discounts available to military Servicemembers and their families.? Simply having a military ID gives you access to benefits and services that are available on any given armed forces or military installation.? But there are a lot of opportunities not generally known for military families to save money, some of these many are aware of and some of them most people don’t know about.? Here are some ideas:

Entertainment and Travel- There are several ways that having a military ID or being a military family member can pay off when you vacation. Here are some different ways and things you can remember.

Temporary Housing- Many military facilities have temporary housing or housing that you can access while traveling. Many times it is available for less than 100 dollars a night and can also feature rooms with kitchen facilities, which can further save you money. Its best to call ahead for a reservation and to see if vacancies exist.

ITT Information- larger military facilities have some version of the ticket, information and tours office. Military families qualify for substantial discounts on amusement parks, zoos, museums, and other attractions. Its good to look on the Internet to find out what is available in the area where you will be traveling. Sometimes there are even discounted tickets available for concerts, shows or other events.

Space A Travel- Military personnel and their families qualify for seats on military aircraft that are left over, or space available. This is a great way to explore and travel both domestically and internationally, but you have to have some flexibility on time, and be patient. But if you have flexibility, you can travel long distances for next to nothing, it’s a great benefit to many families. Armed Forces Rec. Centers. These are literally vacation destinations that are reserved exclusively for military Servicemembers and their families. They are service resorts managed by the United States Army to provide affordable vacation opportunities to military families There are Armed Forces Recreation centers in Korea, Germany, Florida and Hawaii.
These facilities are very affordable and a great benefit to vacationing Servicemembers and their families.

Armed Forces Vacation Club- Many of the larger amusement parks have free admission or deeply discounted admission for Servicemembers and their families. Sometimes this is on a specific day, or at other times. Your base ITT ticket officer will have more information.

Regarding finding the best deals and discounts, the most important thing is to ask.

I served from July, 1960 to June, 1963 I never received an ID. Only thing I have is my DD 214. How am I supposed to get the discount?

Already had it out with Home Depot over the Memorial Holidays, they advertised 10% discount to ALL Veterans. I went in, purchased a lot if items I needed and the cashier demanded I show her my Military ID Card. I told her the only Veterans with a Military Identification Card (MIC) were veterans receiving Veterans Medical Services. I demanded to see her Supervisor and a young guy less than 25 years old walked up so I explained to him there was no MIC for old Vets like myself and he called me a liar that if I was a Vet I’d have a card. Then he proceded to tell me that without the card any 29 year old could come in claiming to be a Vet. I stopped him right then demanding “Do I look like a 29 y.o.? I am 69 years young anyway and he got nervous and said that was just to illistrate why. I told him back when I got out of High School you either joined or you were drafted unless you had a mental or physical problem and asked him to look around through the store. Almost guarantee anyone my age fit my description of join or be drafted. I got nowhere so I went in the next day and asked for the Store Manager, got the Assistant Manager and we had it out. He gave in and gave me the discount.

Now I read the article above and it states “Simply having a military ID gives you …..”. What is this Military ID? I certainly stand tall for our Hero’s serving our great Country today over in Iraq, Afganistan and other places we may not even know about and I in no way mean to take anything away from them, please do not read this wrong. I just want to know what this Military ID is mentioned above.

You will not have a military ID as a vet, but Lowes and Home Depot will, I believe, accept a DD214 on those holidays. You may also be able to get a veteran status put on your driver’s license. Here in Georgia, you can take your DD-214 to the VA and they give you a form which gets your drivers license designated veterans, and makes it FREE. So I just got mine today and no longer have to pay to renew my license.

I suggest checking into your states VA benefits department website and read their FAQ’s.
