Naval Academy Educational Options

August 21, 2008 By admin

The US Naval Academy located in Maryland has a long proud Navy tradition. It is one of four different military academies, that teach and prepare young men and women for service in the United States Armed forces as Commissioned Officers. The US Naval Academy gives a young person the chance to earn a 4 year college degree and participate in training in Navy and seafaring issues. The Naval Academy has been working to train students since 1845 and works diligently to provide an academic well rounded education. It helps shape the student in social, relational, academic and other issues, as well as providing a quality 4-year military education.
It trains leaders for service in both the Navy and Marine Corps services into the future.

There are a number of different routes to gain access to the US Navy Academy, but to be admitted you have to be appointed. This was accomplished by having a Representative or Senator from your home state sponsor your candidacy. Then it was expanded to allow people who attend a preparatory academy to allow students to gain access by working hard, and proving their qualifications for attending the Naval Academy. These prep academies have very high standards, and if a candidate successfully graduates from one of these prep academies, then they can apply for a special appointment by the Secretary of the Navy. This was and still is a highly competitive method of entrance. This method is not as well known but does provide for additional opportunities for Naval Academy appointment. The Navy also stresses physical conditioning during the educational stay of a midshipman at the Naval Academy. The Naval Academy is a four-year program of study, which leads to a college degree but also an appointment as an Ensign in the United States Navy. One additional element of the education at the Navy Academy is in morality. They operate with an honor code that is taken very seriously, and it is the basis for much of the life and conduct at the Naval Academy. You will be trained in some of the finest academic training, but that is just the start.
