Navy Ships ? For Battle, Transportation and More

September 19, 2011 By admin

When you think about the Navy what comes to mind? Most people think of big ships and sailors. For many years, the United States Navy has been relying on a variety of ships to handle tasks ranging from enemy warfare to transporting supplies and sailors and much more.

Believe it or not, many people enlist in the Navy because of their love for the ocean. Furthermore, they have an extreme interest in Navy ships and all that they have to offer.

The term ?US Navy ships? is broad. As you dig deeper you will find that there are many types of ships that are used by the Navy on a regular basis.

Types of Navy Ships

Aircraft Carriers: with the help of these ships, it is possible for Naval Air Power to be deployed around the world. From World War II to the 9/11 attacks, aircraft carriers have always been ready to take action.

Amphibious Assault Ships: the primary responsibility of these ships is to transport, deploy, and support ground troops across the globe. These ships are often times referred to as the ?Gator Navy? and include: Amphibious Assault Ships, Amphibious Command Ships, Amphibious Transport Dock, Dock Landing Ships, Landing Craft ? Air Cushioned, and Landing Craft ? Mechanized and Utility.

Cruisers: these large combat ships are capable of engaging multiple targets. These ships are fully equipped with Tomahawk missiles, allowing for long range strikes on the enemy. Some of the most well known cruisers stationed around the world include: USS Bunker Hill (San Diego, CA), USS Cowpens (Yokosuka, Japan), USS Chosin (Pearl Harbor, HI), USS Anzio (Norfolk, VA), and USS Vicksburg (Mayport, FL).

Destroyers: along with the ability to travel swiftly through the water, destroyers have both offensive and defensive capabilities. The first United States destroyer was commissioned in 1902.

Frigates: warships designed to protect other Navy ships while also acting as an anti-submarine combatant. These ships have short range capabilities as well as the ability to withstand extreme attacks and damage.

Submarines: for underwater operations, ranging from research to rescue to attacks. Submarines have been part of the US Navy since 1900. Submarines can carry out missions as they move undetected through the world?s oceans.
