Specialized Medical Military Benefits

July 25, 2008 By admin

Many people are in the military and they struggle with their weight. Well there is now a benefit open to those Servicemembers who are serving on Active duty. Under the TriCare medical program it is now possible for a Servicemember to qualify for the new surgical LapBand surgery that is currently popular in civilian circles. This is a new benefit that has only recently opened up, and it is for those military personnel who are severely overweight, and who are recommended by a TriCare military doctor. It is called laproscopic adjustable gastric banding and it is not available for everyone, only those personnel who qualify to reduce their weight for medical reasons. This new benefit is something that is mainly for Servicemembers that are currently over one hundred pounds over their ideal weight.

After a number of studies Tricare decided to cover the surgery because people with such high weight are at risk for a number of different severe medical conditions including hypertension, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Lap Band surgery, also known as laproscopic adjustable gastric banding, is now available to those Servicemembers who are referred by their doctor, and who meet certain criteria. This is offered to those service personnel who need to reduce their weight for medical reasons, and it is seen as a valuable new medical benefit. ?This is an new approved procedure because for some it is the right and correct course of action to help preserve their health.? Said Major General Elder Granger. General Granger is the deputy director of Tricare Management Activity. For those who are pre qualified, it is now possible to have Lap Band surgery-using TriCare benefits from the military. This condition is also referred to as morbid obesity, and can be less than one hundred pounds is the persons weight is still high and they are very short. The officials and medical professionals at TriCare stress this is a surgery for morbid obesity, or those persons who are over one hundred pounds over their ideal body weight

This is only one of the procedures that exist to deal with severely morbid obesity. There are other procedures that involved surgery, but at the present time the only one that TriCare military insurance covers is the Lap Band process. Gastric banding is one of several procedures that deal with this condition.
