Tips for Taking and Passing the ASVAB Test

March 26, 2012 By admin

Are you interested in serving the United States in the Military? If so, you have to take the appropriate steps during the enlistment process. One detail that you need to strongly consider is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This is a test that covers basic knowledge ranging from math to vocabulary. If you want to join the military, this test is required.

The score that you receive on the ASVAB will indicate the type of job that is best for you. If you are having a difficult time deciding on a particular career field, the ASVAB can go a long way in helping you make a final choice.

Generally speaking, the higher you score on the test the better the job you can place into. Along with this, you are able to earn more money and be in position to advance your career throughout your time in the military.

With all this in mind, you are probably beginning to realize how important it is to score as high as possible on the test.

As you begin to prepare for the ASVAB, it is important to note that you are tested in eight subsets: Electronics Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Auto and Shop Information, General Science, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, and Arithmetic Reasoning. The scores from these areas count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test. This is what will determine whether or not you qualify for enlistment.

How Important is the ASVAB?

It is easy to believe that the ASVAB is unimportant, just another test that doesn?t mean anything. However, nothing could be further from the truth for those who are interested in enlisting in the Military.

Your score is going to help determine your career specialty. Are you interested in a particular job in the Military? If so, you need to score as high as possible on the ASVAB ? this will ensure that you land the job you are most interested in.

Frequently Asked Questions

While your recruiter can help you better understand the ASVAB and what it is all about, you may be interested in learning more on your own. Below are several frequently asked questions to consider.

Where can I take the ASVAB?

Typically, you will take the ASVAB at a Military Entrance Processing Station. Just because you take this exam does not mean you are required to enlist in the Military. In fact, many people take the test just to see how high they score and which career field they qualify for.

ASVAB scores are valid for two years. If you are interested in enlisting after two years of taking the exam, you will need to re-test before enlisting.

What is a passing score?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no ?pass? or ?fail? grade associated with the ASVAB. Instead, your score is compared against others at your grade level.

Where do my ASVAB results end up?

You will receive your ASVAB scores along with your school counselor. Additionally, you are required to sign a statement authorizing the Department of Defense to review your test scores.

Although it takes 180 minutes to complete the ASVAB, most people prepare much longer to actually take the exam.

Scoring high on the ASVAB will require a high level of study and preparation. There are books you can buy as well as online practice exams. While there is nothing like the real thing, the more you study the better off you are going to be.

Once you are prepared, you will feel confident as you sit down to take the exam. Soon enough, you will receive your score and realize that all the time you put into studying was well worth it!
