VA Medical Benefit Coverage You Can’t Do Without

January 10, 2008 By admin

A health package covers all Veterans who are enrolled.? The Enhances Standard package is one that gives primary care, and preventative care, including a full and complete range of inpatient and outpatient services. In 1996, the U.S. Congress voted and passed the Veterans HCER Act of 1996.? This act, referred to as the Veterans Health Care Act, provides for a Medical Package of Benefits a Standard care for all Veterans who enroll in this plan.

The Veterans Administration puts a high priority on making sure that Veterans are treated fairly and that Veterans are satisfied with their service and care quality. Their goal is to make sure it is consistent, found at every location available, and that it is of excellent quality throughout each and every program.? According to the existing Public Law, the Veterans Administration is required to provide both outpatient and hospital care that qualifies as needed.? Needed Care is defined by the Veterans administration as: Procedures, Treatments, Services or Supplies that will preserve, promote, or restore health.

Most of the time solely your health care provider acting with standards that are generally accepted for clinical practice determines this basis of Need. Type of care that can be considered as basic include:

Basic Care.

Basic Care is defined as:? Surgical, Outpatient Medical Treatment, Mental health care, Inpatient Hospital, Surgical, Medical and Inpatient Hospital Mental Health care.? Mental health basic care includes some inpatient and outpatient care for substance abuse.

Prescription Drugs.

These include both prescription and over the counter drugs that are issued or required by your primary care physician.? All Drugs listed under the VA formulary nationally are covered, as are surgical and medical supplies.

Preventative Care.

This includes:? Periodic medical exams, Nutritional education, Health education, Immunizations, Screening tests, and various health care assessments.

Emergency Care.

All Emergency Care at Veterans Administration facilities is covered.? Emergency care at non-VA facilities is sometimes covered; it depends on the circumstances and conditions.? The Veterans Administration is restricted against providing some types of health care.? This is both because of longstanding policy in some cases, and in others it is simply prohibited by law.
The VA cannot provide: Cosmetic surgery (unless specifically approved and allowed by VA for a specific medically necessary reason), any drug or biological substance not approved by the VA, abortion counseling, abortions, membership or support for health spas or health clubs, in vitro fertilization, or sex change or Gender change surgeries.

I want to know about catarac surgery, does the VA cover this on a non-diaabled vet. I have been using the VA for about 16 years, and I am not a DAV, just a Vietnam Vet.
