Veteran And Military Friendly Schools

November 28, 2008 By admin

There are many universities and colleges that are genuine, and there are specific issues to be aware of, and that can help you make a wise choice. There are some things to watch for in finding a school for you to attend, and some things that you should be aware about. There are times when part of the classes you have taken don?t always qualify for credit, or qualify for less credit at your new school but that all depends. Most schools give credit for most certified classes, you have to check with your individual school.

Just as you likely have experienced as a member of the military, there are some locations that are real, and some places that you have served that were like a fa?ade, all glitter and no glory. Well, schools are much the same. There are schools that are real, and then there are diploma mills that exist merely to produce fake diplomas for money. Accreditation- This is the most important issue in finding a University or College to attend. There are six different regional accreditation groups in the United States. The US Counsel of Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education have cooperated to certify and license colleges and universities in the United States. In some cases there are deeper levels of specific certification that are required, in subjects like engineering, nursing, architecture, or
mathematics. The military often has a large effect on the school that Servicemembers and Veterans choose. The training that a Veteran undergoes often gives them experience that interests them and gives them a certain direction for their military and civilian education choices. Living in a number of locations during your duty career can be a real advantage. You can take the experiences that you have had serving in the military, and use them to your best advantage in selecting a school. Transferability- Most Universities and colleges have some sort of transfer policy, but it is important to figure out if the credits you take will transfer to other schools. Because of certificated schools being federally certified, if you have attended a school with a national certification, then transferring classes, or to another school or program is not normally a big issue.

Delivery Method- Now, whether you attend in person or by long distance, you should choose the institution and program that fits your schedule, your interests and your goals and select the school that is the best fit. There are a high number of colleges and universities that are genuine, and there are those that are simply ?Diploma Mills.? Mainly it is an issue that depends on what the student needs, and the convenience of the student. In the past distance learning was viewed as 2nd class educational learning.

It is more about what the University you are thinking about going to has to offer in the way of access and services to the military member or veteran. I attend Western Michigan University and I LOVE it here. Before you ask, YES, I grew up in Michigan, but when I graduate I plan to move away from the snow. And YES, I have served 20+ years in the Army and am currently in the National Guard while in college. When I graduate, I really hope to gain admission to Texas A&M University. I have heard that Texas A&M has an excellent Graduate and PhD. program in the field of Military History, and I want in.
The granting of the title or ranking of being “Military & Veteran Friendly” depends upon who is making the choices. I tend to trust the literature related to and produced by the military. As they are the ones with the people looking to go to school, and they will profit from that education. I still LOVE Western Michigan University, but I guess I’m biased, and NOT because I’m from Michigan. When I was ready to go to college, Michigan State an the University of Michigan both told me that I would have to go thru the same process as a “traditional Freshman”.
Sorry, NOT happening. I have spilled blood for this nation, and I’m a bit old to go around playing games like some 18 year old fresh out of high school. On the other hand, if not for their attitudes, I never would have found WMU and become the student I am today. I will be PROUD to say I went to WMU, no matter where I go from here, because this university, from Dr. Dunn, the WMU resident, all the way down, WMU care for their students, we are not just numbers.
