Visit Lovely Mediterranean Greece

February 15, 2008 By admin

There are a lot of places to visit in the world.  If you have never been to Greece, it is one of the different places that are possible to visit using the Space Available Military System.  Flights travel fairly often into the USAF base at Souda Bay.  From there you can branch out and travel to different areas in and around Greece, and Crete.

The mission of the Base at Souda Bay is to provide Mission Control, logistics, and aerial support to forces operating in the region and throughout the NATO mission.  The facilities at Souda Bay are undergoing extensive remodeling, including the Space Available terminal.

Flying into NSA Souda Bay you will be landing on a large circular shaped piece of real estate called the Akrotiri Peninsula. NSA Souda bay is located on the Greek Hellenic Air Force near the village of Mouzouras, Greece.  The US Navy base is a tenant, but the Space Available system does fly in and out of Souda Bay.

There is a great deal of things to see and do in the area.  Some of the different activities you can engage in are quite involved; others will just take you an afternoon.  So, be bold, and try new things.  Here are some of the different things you may consider:
-Visit and take in the natural beauty of Agio Nikolao
-Venture out and take a cruise to nearby Santorini, the nearby Greek volcanic Island.
-Travel and visit the ruins at Knossos Palace nearby.
-Tour the town of Chania and its beautiful harbor, and dine near the water.
-Take a driving tour through Mochlos, Siteia, and Tholos.
-Grab a snorkel, and dive off Crete and admire the beauty of the crystal clear ocean.

There is a great deal to see and do when you visit the Mediterranean area.  Greece is a member of NATO, and the people are for the most part very friendly and welcome tourists.  The local military supported our first live Patriot Missile test in 1999, and continues to provide both logistical and enthusiastic support of our Armed Forces stationed there.

Finding a flight to the Mediterranean can be a challenge.  But if you are willing to work several days in for travel, and if you travel light, then using the Space Available flight system for military Servicemembers you can often save a bundle, and obtain a first rate vacation for inexpensive funds.

Space Available is open to all Active Duty members on a priority basis.  Members traveling on orders for duty are first, as is emergency travel.  But active duty Servicemembers on leave can still find flights and travel if they are persistent and patient.
