What the US Navy Offers Their Reservists

US Navy Reservists fall into one of two categories: Enlisted or Officer. The educational requirement as an enlisted reservist is a high school diploma. Officer reservists must have a 4 year college degree. While serving your country one weekend a month and two weeks during the year, the Navy Reserves offers you great benefits for your service:

Compensation – pay is according to rank and duration of service in the Reserves. Should you be called to Active Duty, you will be compensated at Active Duty pay rates.

Insurance – Select Reservists are eligible for TriCare Reserve Select medical insurance. Life insurance can also be purchased very inexpensively. Military medical facilities should you become ill or injured during training.

Education Compensation – For 6 years of service in the Reserves, you can qualify for the Montgomery GI bill. Should you serve active duty for 90 days and meet certain other requirements, you have funds available from the Veteran’s Education Assistance Act of 2008. Tuition assistance and assistance for certain degrees is also available.

Income Perks – As a reservist, you and your family have access to Commissaries and Exchanges. With 6 years of honorable service, you can quality for a low interest VA loan to purchase a home. You are also eligible to deduct some expenses from your tax return related to your service in the Reserves.

Your civilian job is secure should you be ordered to Active Duty during training or during a national emergency. When you couple that with the benefits you receive while serving, your future is secure with the US Navy Reserve.
