What to Expect from the Military Diet

November 20, 2016 By larryf

If you’ve decided you want to try the military diet, you need to go into it with the right expectations. This isn’t just some typical diet plan you will follow for months and turn into a new lifestyle. It’s an extreme diet, for extreme people looking to lose weight fast.

Military personnel may use this diet to make weight when that time comes each year. The last thing you want is to end up in trouble because you were a couple pounds overweight or your body fat percentage was a bit high. Here’s a look at some of the things you can expect if you use the military diet to make weight or for any other reason.

Expect to Use Extreme Willpower

Do you love to eat? Do you enjoy eating restaurant food, pizza and other junk you know isn’t healthy? If so, this diet plan is going to test your willpower. Luckily, it will only test it for three days before you get a breather from it.

Expect to Feel Hungry

The notion that cutting calories can somehow be done without feeling hungry is bogus. There’s no magic pill to keep you from feeling hungry when you eat less than your body is used to. The military diet does work in coffee or tea, which can help to suppress your appetite, but you will still feel hungry for at least the first three days.

Expect to Get Sick of Tuna

If you follow some of the meal plans you can easily find online, you will probably end up sick of canned tuna. Some call for it each day, if not multiple times a day because it’s super high in protein, low in calories and low in fat.

Expect to Feel Fatigued

Those needing energy to handle an active job may struggle on the military diet. You will feel fatigued as you are not giving your body as much energy to burn as normal. While this is good because it causes your body to burn fat, it will likely cause fatigue for the first three days and maybe all week long. It’s best to ensure you use the diet only when you can have some control over your exercise and physical activity.

Expect to Sleep More

When we don’t feed our body as much food as it’s used to, it may cause a need for additional sleep. This isn’t a bad thing, as our bodies have the ability to burn calories and fat while we sleep. They will also recover during this time. Make sure you plan for at least eight hours of sleep, even if this isn’t normal for you.

Expect to Drink Plenty of Water

If you don’t drink enough water, the military diet may become very dangerous. It’s necessary to up your water intake, unless you’re already used to drink an ounce of water for every two pounds of your body weight.

Along with these expectations, you should expect to lose between three and ten pounds within a week. If you decide to use the military diet to make weight or for any other reason, take a few hours to set up your plan and think about the realistic expectations of what the next week will hold for you.
