1. Cut your hair! You don’t have to go in with a buzz cut, but cut it short enough that the haircut won’t be traumatic. Going in with long hair may simply cause your CO to pay special attention to you, and that’s not something you want to happen.

2. Get in the best physical shape that you can. Basic training is one of the hardest things you may ever have to do! You can do it, but the more you prepare ahead of time, the better off you are. It won’t be easy, even if you’re in top shape. But you can make it a little easier on yourself. The point of basic training is pushing you to the point where you don’t think you can do it, and then pushing you beyond that to show you what you’re capable of. So nothing will make it easy, but the better shape you’re in, the less difficult it will be.

3. Decide that you can do it. If you really want to be a United States soldier, it will take serious commitment on your part.
