There are over 750 US military bases around the world, and that’s just the ones that are public knowledge. There might be additional bases that are classified. Either way, that leaves a lot of possibilities for young service members who are deploying for the first time.
With so many bases around the world, some of them naturally have more advantages than others. This raises the question of what the best US military bases in the world are.
We’ll discuss some of the most popular bases in this article.
1. Rota, Spain
Nestled on the coasts of southern Spain, the Naval base in Rota has become a favorite among sailors and their families. This base is right near the beach, and within weekend-vacation distance of several different places.
A few hours’ trip will take you to Morocco or Portugal, as well as a few major Spanish cities. If you’re just as comfortable exploring foreign cities as you are laying on the beach, Naval Station Rota might be the best assignment you can hope for.
2. Stuttgart, Germany
Stuttgart is one of the most famous cities in Germany, and it boasts a population of over 600,000. Stuttgart has plenty of shopping and nightlife, and also offers unique attractions such as vineyards, beer gardens, and even hot springs.
There are plenty of museums as well, including ones dedicated to Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. Stuttgart also boasts the second-largest beer festival in the world and a gigantic Christmas market.
3. Pyongtaek, South Korea
Pyongtaek is an Army base less than an hour from Seoul, and it offers many of the same benefits. It’s near a coast, which means there are beaches nearby.
It’s also one of the oldest cities on this list, having been founded in roughly 940 AD. It has the historical attractions to prove it.
Those working in STEM fields might appreciate the level of technology present in the city, particularly in some of the apartments.
4. Suffolk, United Kingdom
There’s not much that beats the simple tranquility of the British countryside, and Suffolk proves this. The country isn’t your only option, though. There are plenty of cities within driving distance of Suffolk.
Perhaps the greatest draws of Suffolk are the nearby towns, which boast everything from centuries-old churches and theaters, to restaurants and racing grounds.
5. Okinawa, Japan
The site of one of the final, and deadliest, battles of WWII, Okinawa is now a veritable paradise for Japanese and Americans alike. The island’s most famous attraction is Shurijo Castle, an eighteenth century castle that was damaged during WWII, but has since been restored.
Okinawa is also tropical, with a mangrove forest and plenty of interesting wildlife. Keep in mind that while most of the wildlife is fascinating, a few species are endangered, and some are dangerous. You should study up on wildlife before you reach Okinawa.
