Heidelberg, Germany-The Surgical Airborne Team of the United States Army is headed to the nation of Afghanistan in the next several months to be on scene to provide surgery when and where its needed in support of United States Soldiers.
The Airborne 67th Forward Surgery Team has been based in Germany and it is one of the five surgical Airborne teams that are in the United States Army. They received their deployment orders to Afghanistan and may be there for up to a year on their tour of duty.
Trauma on the battlefield has what is seen as a ?Golden hour? where if they receive necessary treatment the survival rate is very high. This assignment to a surgical team is highly sought, as it provides excellent training for the time after a person gets out of the military. The Surgical team sees all different types of injuries, from the minor to the severe.
The team is comprised of just under 30 personnel, nurses, doctors and medics that can fit into six mobile Humvee vehicles if necessary, and they will work to treat both United States, Afghanistan and NATO troops, as well as civilians.
