Many people believe that in order to join the military, they are only required to pass basic training, a process in which a person physically prepares themselves to become a soldier. Well, today’s military wants a soldier that is both physically fit and intelligent. For this reason, would-be soldiers must be able to pass another type of test that determines how much intellect they possess. This test is called The Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery, (known as ASVAB) for short. If a person fails the test, they will not be eligible to join the Armed Forces, though they will be given an opportunity to take the test again if they desire. If they pass they will be allowed to join. Additionally, the military will use the results of the test to determine what type of military job they would best be suited for.

The ASVAB test itself tests several areas of knowledge, such as math, science, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. It also has exams that test one’s skills when it comes to auto & shop, mechanics and electronics. Of course, before a person gets to the true meat of the ASVAB, they will usually be given a pre-qualification test first. This pre-qualification test does receive a score, but if the score is low a person will still be able to proceed with the real test. The purpose of the pre-qualification test is to give a person an idea of how they will do on the real ASVAB.
In terms of scoring, the ASVAB does not have an official score for the overall test. However, the AFQT, a part of the ASVAB does have a score. This is what military people are referring to when they are bragging about their score, (though many mistakenly believe it is in reference to the ASVAB). In the case of the AFQT, the score is on a 99-point scale.
When it comes to what is needed to pass the AFQT portion of the ASVAB, it will depend on what branch of the military a person is trying to get into. Most will allow for scores that are in the low to mid-30s. Yet, a person will not want to get in the military on the bare-bones minimum scores, because their military job opportunities will become limited. For this reason, soldiers should study for the ASVAB exam before they plan on taking it.
Many study aides are available for the ASVAB exam. The best ones will contain several practice tests along with detailed information on the type of knowledge a person will need to be able to do well. If a person is looking to get into a specific type of military job, they can consider getting an ASVB exam guide that is designed around that specific career. Really ambitious soldiers may want to make sure they are fully covered by studying both general ASVAB study guides as well as more specific career-based ones. Either way, as long as a soldier does some preparation for the ASVAB exam, they won’t be totally shocked at both the test and their resulting AFQT score. But in case you’re searching for the ultimate adventure, why not become a Navy Seal?

I am a young man trying to find a way of life.Sick of doing nothing! I feel as though the military can make me into a better man. I would like to play college football for the army if could, but at the same time train to be a soldier in the military and receive a degree at the same time if possible!I dont know if this is possible with my age of (22). i need help passing the asvab
Hi my name is Roberto and have a couple of questions 1st is that this going to be my fifth time taking the asvab, i really want to join the army but i just cant pass it this time i have studied more than two months i am really concern that i will fail again can u give any tips
Hello,
I took the Asvab for the first time and got an 83.
I think I may have some tips to help you all pass the asvab test:
1. MATH:
Please remember order of operations. The order of operations in the order in which you solve a problem. If you follow the order… you WILL get the problem right!
PLEASE ( Parenthesis )
EXCUSE ( Exponents… like 4^2 = 16 )
MY (Multiplication)
DEAR ( Division )
AUNT ( Addition )
SALLY ( subtraction )
Also, it is good to know very basic geometry.
For Example…
A circle has 360 degrees.
A triangle has 180 degrees.
A diameter is the distance from any point of a circle to the exact middle.
A Radius is a line that goes through the middle of the circle from one side to the other.
I finished each math section with 15+ minutes to spare. Although I do consider myself to be good at math, I feel there is ample time to WRITE EACH PROBLEM OUT.
Use your scratch paper. Ask for an additional piece. USE IT! Mental Math is NOT your friend on this test.
English comprehension & word association:
The section on reading comprehension…. EASY
Read the questions first. DO NOT READ THE PARAGRAPH until you have seen the questions. The odds are you will read your answers in the order they are presented in the questions.
Some of the questions may ask “what is the purpose of the writing?” Do you feel the passage tried to persuade you? Inform you? Discourage you? Imagine the tone if someone were reading it to you.
Word association:
“One of these is NOT like the other!”
Find out which word in the answers does not go. Also… sound out the word in your head. Sometimes you know the word, but do not recognize it because it is not a word used in our daily lives. I’d say for 75% of the questions, the answer is overly obvious. Go with your first instinct.
General Science:
I am 25 years old ( at the time writing this ) and it has been a LONG time since I have taken high school science. All of this material is learned in high school science or is common sense. It was 10 years ago when I “learned” the material; however, the questions asked were more common sense than things that should be studied.
Remember… this test is not a competition. Go get some tutoring. If you are taking the test for the 5th time, the way you prepared the past four times doesn’t work. If you need some electrical work done and are not familiar with the trade, doing it yourself is a bad idea. You would call an electrician.
The same goes for preparing for this.
I wish you all the best of luck!
Todd
Todd, you need to check your definitions for diameter and radius.
first time i tried i made a 23 im trying harder but the whole word thing gets me,….& i do believe your tips will help me thank you!
I need help passing the asvab test I’ve been trying to pass for a year now.. I keep missing it by 1 point.. If you think you can help me e-mail me @ [email protected]
The first time I took it… I got a 70. I didn’t study for jack.
What I found to be disappointing is the fact that I did better in Mechanics than Electronics.
I’ll try to write something meaningful here that will help those of you who want to ace the exam. For anyone trying to pass the ASVAB, I would suggest checking out the study guides in your local library. I checked out the ASVAB for dummies book and a few other ASVAB books designed to help you increase your knowledge about the test format, etc. Also, I checked out arithmatic books, geometry books, and learned math that I didn’t understand in school! You will only get credit for the problems you answer correctly on the test. Remember, reserve a day or two to youself before the test, so that you can really learn what u are studying. I took it the first time and aced it with an above average score based on the study routine I mentioned above. Good luck!
i have taken the asvab several times and have come up a few points short of at least a 31 i know its best to get the highest score but i want to at least be able to get that … i have serious math comprehension issues i cant understand math for nothin no one will help me ive studied the books went online to march to success and everything ..NOTHING helps can anyone help me? if so email me [email protected] thanks
The ASVAB test really does help… in my 10th grade year i took it and got a 95, recruiters have been hovering around like vultures ever since. My guidance counselor was shocked and stated that his friend back when he was a senior in college didn’t even score that high, and that i have one of the highest scores that most people have seen lately. So, taking the ASVAB and doing your very best is a major help into getting into the military.
The first time I took my asvab I got a 48. You now need a 50 to join USAF. Tomorrow I will be taking it again after studying the asvab book I got off of ebay for 20 dollars. WIsh me luck.
Okay so I have taken the asvab twice now and came short a few points from a 31. my trouble is math! Im trying to find better websites because I am taking my asvab again in 2 weeks or sooner. if anyone has any ideas. please email me at [email protected]. thank you!!!!
All of you guys on here are going to pass because you have the want to. Dont let this test beat you, you beat it! If you talked to someone who you think is a successful person, you would be surprised (if they were honest) how many failures it took for them to get where they are today. You really know what it will take for you individually to get past this test, so just do it! My has decided to go into the military too and is now studying. My prayers are for you.
im trying to get in and missed my score of a 50 and got a 48 or 49 and have to take it again march2success helped some but still didnt pass anyone knows any free sites or anything to help me out please mail me the info thank you [email protected]

Im really interested in joining the military. I’ve graduated high school, and went to college for a year, and now i feel its time for me to grow up and do something with my life. The first time i scored a 20. After that i bought the asvab for dummies book, and that helped out a whole lot, and when i took the test i was very confident that i scored well. But i scored a 24. Even though i improved four points, i was still disappointed. My biggest issues were the Arithmetic Reasoning, and Word Knowledge. I retest next month , and if i don’t pass i have to wait 6months. If anyone knows other ways to study and practice the test besides the asvab book, Please email me at [email protected], or [email protected].. Thanks!:)
Okay I took the asvab the first time I made a 18. Recrutier said study one week ill be bck to test you again I studied really hard that next friday took it. Again made a 39 I really happy going to sign up and going to meps soon

I took the ASVAB 3 times. Each time I was only 4points away from a 31. Im on my 6 months waiting period now. I can take the test next month. I’m horrible at test. I know I can pass it but, I get really nervous during test too. I really want to join the Army because it will give my son & I a better life. Anyone please help me, give me study tips anything really….

i am ayoung person that needs to prepare. i am going to try to get into the naval acadamy. how do i prepare?
You guys are crazy I would kill to have scores like yall. with ur 48s and 90s and 50s…im the one who needs the most help i took the asvab 3 times and each time the score was extra extra low im talkn about 14, 17, and 18 now if someone can help me with that i would be impressed…….
I have taken the ASVAB 4 times already and I have a test coming up in the next 3 months so the best advice I can give you guys is to just take your time. For me, I just take my time and do some heavy studying because the Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge is really knocking me down. I also have friends that do believe in me and have the faith that I need in order to pass. Travvis for you man just take it easy breathe and concentrate, try to get lots of your free time to study, study all day if you have to and you will see your results increase.
I just took the ASVAB and made a 35. I actually thought I did much better. I’m seriously thinking about taking it over to increase the amount of jobs that I would be eligible for in the Army Reserves. My scores were: GT-92, CL-89, CO-87, EL-89, FA-87, GM-87, MM-90, OF-88, SC-89, ST-89. I have absolutely no clue what these numbers mean and will probably get a crappy job! Please someone help me to understand the numbers above.
I can say this to score 50 or higher on the asvap. Take some college courses. For instance if math is your weakness enroll into a math a course. If vocabulary or reading comprehension is a weaknes enroll into a English class or reading. For the rest of the test grab the asvap study guide this stuff works. Grab any tutor that can assist you, your mom, dad, brother, sister, aunty, etc can be that tutor to help you succeed.
I got a 9 on the asvab when i didnt think that would be possible and ive been studying everyday for the past month. what should I do?
I took the ASVAB pretest and scored a 31. Im planning on going back and taking the test in two weeks. My issue is with the math as well. Math has never been one of my strongest points and this is where my struggle will be. My recruiter stated that I looked as if I was ready to take the real test in one week, I stated it would be best to give myself two weeks. Im hoping to raise my score to at least a 50 to join as a Navy Reserve. Thank you for your incite on the test and will keep you updated.
Just to let you know (Todd) the diameter is the line through the circle and the radius is half of a circle. I believe you have it wrong. Ethan PHD in mathematical concepts. I teach at the University of Ohio.
i keep taking the asvab and failing i just want to give back to my country, but i cant pass and its a pain, my main thing that im horrible at is math so anyone please help
I score a 41 the first time i took the asvab last week if anyone need help email and can tell you how i got the score
WHAT considered a failing score or a passing score? where can you look to see what the scores coinside with what jobs.. what job would a 46 get you..or a 36 ..or a 56?
this is for Jr july 11th 2011 at 1?39

For studying try using these websites,
4test.com
Asvabprep.com
March2Success.com
or, you could go stop by the book store and pick up the book “ASVAB for Dummies”
Hey, Jr. what’s your email?
I have been searching the web for days looking for advice on accommodations for an ASVAB 18 yr, old I’m tutoring with an I.E.P. Does it exist?
Im 19 and i just took the ASVAB for the first time and i scored an 83 im not particularly smart or anything i think you just have to get the right book to study dont go the really complicated ones i got ASVAB for dummies it was aeasy to understand and the questions were just like the ones on the actual ASVAB! Dont confuse yourself you got it!! 🙂
Hello, my son got 76 today at USAF Reserve. He studied using ASVAB for dummies. Before he was not so good in Math but I hired a Math Professor and paid $25/hr to teach him more complex math and calculus. Invest in tutoring and you will gain. You can hire tutors in HS or go to Craigslist you will see tutors for Math. You can bargain the price per hour and show him your ASVAB textbook so he/she can teach you resolve the problems. It’s all worth it and I wish you all good luck because you are doing this for your country.
Secondly, the way my son studied is he resolves 5 problems in each subject/Chapter everyday. That way, you covered the whole book by the time you take the real test. Get the book “ASVAB for Dummies” . In fact, I may sell my son’s since he does not need it anymore.
I have taken the asvab exam twice already.
1st exam i bombed
2nd exam i improved, got a 24 but still not a passing score
I’m having difficulties syncing in word knowledge and general science.
I’ve studied 3-4 hrs per day at least 4 times out of the week. I’ve looked at 3 different books, yet I have not passed.
Any suggestions on how to study for vocabularies??? And how to study for the general science section??
because i feel as if things i study for are not on the exam.
I really want to get into the military, asap because I feel like nothing is happening here where I stand besides little drama and adds more problem in my life. I want to better serve our country, our nation and expand my outlook in life.
PLEASE HELP!!!
By the way, would tutor help???
they are so expensive, $40 per hour required 2 hr sessions, twice a week so 140 per week.
Need help passing the ASVAB I have taken it twice and fell short like 4 or 5 point this is really what I want in life but the test is in the way and I refuse to let it break my spirits. could some one please give me some good study tips or some thing I studyed the asvab book but I don
Hello I took the afgt and have been getting a 5 all the time and what the hell? Im sick of getting it I have tryed everthing and did not work I’m just reading so what do I can to pass? ????
I’m 17 and a senior in high school and I took the ASVAB for the first time a couple weeks ago when I wasn’t even aware I was supposed to take it until that morning when I walked into school because my guidance counselor didn’t tell me she signed me up for it. For my Military Entrance Score (AFQT) I scored a 96 and I’m not quite sure what do now that I have my results because I’m not sure about joining the military.
Took the practice exam without study, scratch paper. or taking my time on a dare. Scored a 75. Gonna study and retake. Just want to say people need to turn of the TV read and educate themselves. Geez we have a lot of young dumb people.
Look I took the asvab twice the 1st time i got a 27 then the second i got a 32. Mann that wasnt enough I was confused. So wat I did was research the internet for questions, study guides so i can score a 50. and i promise you quizlet.com is very very helpful there was every word i knew on my third time test which was today, it was on the test. i mean they have autoshop science MATH everything Look take this advice use it its very helpful, or email me i made my own study guides and the are 100% helpful, Good Luck and God bless I hope to see you serving our country with me

I am recently trying to enlist in the Army. I took my asvab twice. I failed the same time by two points away from a 31. It sucks opening up that envelope and seeing its not what you work so hard towards. but honestly i felt discouraged and everything but i am not giving up and i am gonna re take it for the last time, I have troubles in the arithmetic portion. English section is pretty easy. i always miss like a couple. I am good at that. but math ugh. my weak point. i need help.
:[
any suggestions.
The asvab makes me mad also I scored a 14 then a 17 I know what my weak point is arithmetic. Reasoning. Which is basically putting a math problem together of fractions and the test is weired math. Counts as 2 points each on the testthe most important thing to study for there is about 200 questions on the test they deduct. A point of every question. You get wrong why do you think we all score low its math I should be ok in a month I should be ok wish me luck
As of 2012, what is the minimum score to get on the asvab to go into the USMC?

I mean Ace the ASVAB Test and Get The Best Military Jobs!
(Sample Test!) – USMilitary.com is kinda boring. You might glance at
Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create post titles to get people interested. You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to grab people interested about everything’ve got to
say. In my opinion, it would bring your blog a little livelier.
no offense to all the seals out there especially seal team six. whose founder is my hero (yes i mean richard marcinko. but i would rather be an amry ranger or a green beret because most of my family has been in the army.
I much like the useful data you furnish within your content articles.I will bookmark your blog site and verify yet again here frequently.I’m quite totally sure I’ll find out a whole lot of latest things proper right here! Beneficial luck with the next!
Not Bad.., May 15, 2011Bya0 This review is from: I bguoht this book to review for the ASVAB for the purpose of qualifying for Army Officer Candidate School. As a 23-year old college graduate with a liberal arts degree, my biggest concern was the math. While seemingly innocuous, I was at first intimidated by some of the algebra and division in the review section. Going through the problems with the book, and practicing on my own helped bring me back to speed. I did notice that there were a few math errors in the book, however I don’t feel as qualified to comment on the quality of the math section as a whole because of my own mathematical limitations. I can say however, that the math in the review and practice sections does go a bit beyond what is in the actual computerized ASVAB. Regardless, the math review got me up to speed, and the English review section, while unneeded for my purposes, seemed like it could help those less acquainted with the language. As for my results, I scored a 95 on the ASVAB, and a 135 on the GT section. I studied maybe five solid hours for the math portion in the weeks prior to the test, and another six hours going over the whole book at MEPS the day before the test. Not bad, I’d say. HI GUys .. I THINK I CAN HELP WITH FEW TIPS OF MY OWN
-I HAVE TAKEN THE ASVAB ABOUT 3 TIMES
1: SCORED A 27
2——————##30
3———————-24
4—-;————-;—–44
Ok here is my tip get the asvab for dummies and read all the intro it gelps you to understand the test…. after. That take the first test in the book alone in silence no music no distractions and see where you do good and where u did bad…
For the second test as u go by the questions answer and after that go to see the answe in the answer sheet… that way you know why and what you did wrong
take the other tests just like that the same way and try to understand each question sounds tought but as u u go by u will rememver procedures and stuff……GHAT WAS FOR MATH
Paragraph comprehention! Read the question first THEN THE ANSWERS ALL OF THEM the the passage most of the time main idea is in the firs paragraph or the last one
Word knowledge MAN YOU HAVE A PHONE DOWNLOAD A ASVAB WORD KNOWLEDGE AP
Just took the practice ASVAB yesterday. Scored a 56. If you cant go out and buy the ASVAB Practice Books I’d suggest YOUTUBE for help. Tutor yourself! I had to use YOUTUBE to learn all kinds of math that i had forgotten over the years. Trust me, every thing you need to know about math IS on YOUTUBE. Its high school math. You need to know how to do fractions, percentages, and how to solve for “x”, among a few others (these are what gave me trouble.) You need to know a pretty good amount of vocabulary. best way to work on that is to look up every single word you see or hear that you don’t know the meaning to, then write it down. There is also Paragraph Comprehension which is reading a few sentences and answering the question below. I was super worried about this test but even with my lack of math skills i did pretty well. Just study. The world web is your best tool. USE IT TO STUDY! you dont need to pay someone to tutor you as long as you have the internet.
Hi . I’m trying to go the army reserve I Speke arabic trying to get 09l any info about that job ? Thank you so much for your help .
I earned 93 on my first attempt. Just take some online sample quizzes, practice some math without a calculator, and take your time. It’s a long test and people get burned out easily. Especially if you haven’t been in school for a few years like I was. And get a job that translates well into civilian life. NEVER GO IN WITH AN OPEN CONTRACT.
I would like to encourage all young adults to consider the US Military a career option. When I was 19 years old, I was newly married and layed off from a department store retail dead end job. I had no money for college and honestly no desire to attend. I didnt know what i wanted to do in life and the local job market was tight especially for me (high school graduate of average intelligence). I took this test when there were no study guides and no Internet (1972). Take this test serious like I did not. I think I made a 76 or 78 on it and ended up joining the USAF as a Medical Admin Specialist on a 6 year commitment which was a good job. As a result of the benefits afforded me, I served a three year tour of duty in Athens, Greece, and earned my BS in Computer Science as well as obtaining military bearing that has benefited me during my 35 year career as a Software Developer. It would not have been possible otherwise and I am thankful for what i received. My only regret is that I did not re-enter the military after my graduation from college as an officer.
My name is Judy Brown, I have failed this test twice n soon taking it again, please i need help or something, air force means the world to me. email me at [email protected]
Hey guys just wondering if anyone could help. I took the asvab 2 time 1 time 28 second time. 20 I have been studying for a while now. If anybody can give me some extra tips I would appreciate it. [email protected]
I have taken the asvab 3 times, the first time a 18,second time 32,the third time today I made a 30. I really want to go to the armarmy, now I got to wait 6 months and I didn’t know that until after I took the test today. Can some please help me ?
31 will get you in the Army. Who is your recruiter?
please I need help from you, I have written the asvab for the first time but I failed,so please help me to pass, please.
Did it ever occur to you that in order to do good on the asvab you should proudly do good in other areas of your life first? Like, stop writing like ur texting. Learn how to spel. Stop waching tv. Stop playing console gamz. Instead, read, study, learn. Every day. All the time.
If you do end up learning how to organize your time in such a way that your days are spent learning, that your writing style has progressed from the infantile scratchings one sees in a text message (or a standard newspaper article, frankly) to something worthy of being read by someone who actually enjoys reading (and who does not enjoy being distracted by misspellings, by improper punctuation and by other writing injuries), that any interests you have in life are constantly explored, thus bringing you farther away from Novice, and closer to Expert, within each of your respective interests, that, in other words, you try daily, at all times, to improve yourself and to learn as much as you possibly can, you might find that merely passing the ASVAB is so trivial that it no longer occupies your thoughts. You might find, instead, that your interests lean toward acing the ASVAB, toward knowing that because you qualify for every single Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) available, you wonder which MOS you actually want to pursue… Should it be the one which is most in demand?, the one which offers the highest enlistment bonus? Should it be an MOS which requires a solid foundation in knowledge of electronics? Or should it perhaps lean toward having a strong proficiency with languages? As one who has learned well how to continue to learn, who enjoys learning, as one who doesn’t waste time with the trivial (namely, watching tv shows and playing games, with owning shiny and new things), and as one who still wants to serve one’s country by serving in the military, you’ll enjoy your many, many options. You may decide to sign up for an MOS which comes with a $40,000 enlistment bonus, to open an online brokerage account, to dump all your money into that account, to buy some stocks, and to watch your $40,000 turn into $400,000 by the time your first 4-year tour is up.
If going to college is the ultimate goal, then the GI Bill plus the money from your online brokerage account will surely be attainable.
or u culd keep riting like ur not trying 2 impres ne1 n u culd keep talking about how ur studying 4 teh asvab but keep failing, even tho ur only studying like 2 days b4 teh test.
The choice is yours, but to have an excellent life, to have a broad selection of choices from which to choose for the direction of your life, one needs to work hard, one needs to study hard, one needs to learn hard. No sympathy is given to those who do not strive to go beyond their current lot. Not everyone is born into privilege. Most of us are not. Many of us are born into poverty and hardship, but the choice is yours to move beyond it. If you made the mistake of slacking in high school, you still have plenty of time, every day, to rectify that mistake.
