When you are enlisted as an airman in the United States Air Force, you will be assigned to specific jobs. There are jobs within a career field which are known as Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC). Different careers will have different groupings of AFSCs. When you perform a duty which is outside of the AFSC duties, this is known as a Special Duty Assignment. The Aerial Gunner is an example of a Specialty Duty Assignment.
There are many duties which are assigned to the Aerial Gunner. You will be responsible for making sure all guns and defense related systems are operating properly. It is necessary for you to inspect all systems before and after each flight. All malfunctions for any systems will be properly documented and repaired before the next flight to ensure proper usage. You will learn all safety standards which relate to your position in order that you can adhere to them. You will also be responsible for briefing all passengers which may be flying with you.
The main function of the Aerial Gunner is to make sure all weapons systems are functioning properly and are properly secured for safety and usage reasons.

There are several different technical requirements you will have to learn for the job of Aerial Gunner. Because of this it is required you have at least a High School Diploma or a GED. Experience with electrical or mechanical equipment is desired for working in this position.
Due to the physical nature of the assignment, you will have to meet specific qualifications. You will be tested prior to being awarded the position as well as during the assignment to the position. You will receive ongoing training to keep you performing optimally.
