Yes, Army cutoff scores are significant for promotions. The U.S. Army uses these scores as part of its Enlisted Promotion Point System, which determines who gets promoted from Sergeant (E-5) to Sergeant Major (E-9).
Each soldier earns promotion points based on various categories like:
- Military Training: Points come from job-related skills learned and applied during service.
- Awards and Decorations: Medals earned for achievements or valor contribute to this category.
- Civilian Education: Higher levels of civilian education can earn additional points.
- Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT): High APFT scores can add more points.
At the end of each month, the army publishes new cutoff scores representing the minimum point requirement for advancement in each Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). If a soldier’s total accumulated points exceed this score, they’re eligible for promotion – provided an available position within their MOS.

However, remember – while reaching & surpassing cutoffs increases chances of getting promoted, it isn’t guaranteed! Each candidate must still be evaluated by the respective Promotion Board plus fulfill any necessary training requirements for the next higher rank inside the military hierarchy.
Army cutoff scores are essentially the minimum required points enlisted soldiers need to accrue for promotion. These scores are part of the U.S. Army’s Enlisted Promotion Point System and are crucial in determining who gets promoted from Sergeant (E-5) to Sergeant Major (E-9).
Army Cutoff Scores Summation:
The army releases new cutoff scores monthly depending on its personnel needs within each Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). If your total accumulated point tally exceeds this MOS-specific cutoff, you’re eligible for consideration towards the next rank – given a vacancy available!
But remember – it isn’t just about surpassing these thresholds! Each candidate must still meet necessary time-in-service/time-in-grade criteria, receive favorable evaluations by the respective Promotion Board, and fulfill any mandated training relevant to the desired position inside the army structure.
