When you decide to join the Army, you will take a job, which will be called a Military Occupational Specialty or MOS. The ASVAB score you get will help to determine the MOS choices you have. It’s important to look at the available Army jobs based on ASVAB scores to ensure you know what you need and what you qualify for.
Don’t confuse the ASVAB score with the AFQT score. The AFQT determines whether you get into the Army or not, while the ASVAB score determines the Army job you qualify for. In addition, not every job will simply use your overall ASVAB score as a qualifier.
Understanding the ASVAB Score
The ASVAB provides an overall score, but it also has subtest scores. There are eight total subtests including:
- Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
- Automotive Information (AI)
- Electronics Information (EI)
- General Science (GS)
- Math Knowledge (MK)
- Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
- Auto and Shop Information (AS)
- Word Knowledge (WK)
The score you get on these subtests could also help to determine the type of Army job you will qualify for.
In addition, there’s something called the Army Line Scores. These help to determine where you fit and include the abbreviations from above. The Army Line Scores include:
- Clerical (CL) – Composition VE+AR+MK
- Combat (CO) – Composition AR+AS+MC
- Electronics (EL) – Composition GS+AR+MK+EI
- Field Artillery (FA) – Composition AR+MK+MC
- General Maintenance (GM) – Composition GS+AS+MK+EI
- General Technical (GT) – VE+AR
- Mechanical Maintenance (MM) – Composition AS+MC+EI
- Operators and Food (OF) – VE+AS+MC
- Surveillance and Communications (SC) – Composition VE+AR+AS+MC
- Skilled Technical (ST) – Composition GS+VE+MK+MC
- Verbal Expression (VE) – Composition PC+WK
These Army Line Scores help to show you what you need for your score to qualify for a specific job.
