Do you enjoy working with food? Are you interested in serving your country? If you answered yes to both of these questions, your dream has come true: you can become a Food Service Specialist in the Army National Guard. By making this decision, you are putting yourself in position to work in a field that you enjoy while also doing good for your country and local area.
It is important that every member of the Army gets the proper nutrition, day in and day out. This is why Food Service Specialists are such a big part of the National Guard. From the outside, this career may not appear to be important. However, once you begin working your job you will find that nothing could be further from the truth.
Day after day, your primary responsibility as a Food Service Specialist is to take care of the dietary needs of fellow soldiers. This allows you to do your part in preparing each and every soldier for the tasks that lie ahead.
During your time as a Food Service Specialist in the National Guard, you will learn how to plan and prepare menus. Along with this, you will focus on important details regarding facility sanitation and food safety. No matter if you are feeding 25 soldiers or a group of 1,000 or more, you will have the skills necessary to complete the task without delay.
When your time in the National Guard comes to an end, the training and experience you earned as a Food Service Specialist can be put to good use as a member of the hospitality industry. In other words, your food service days do not have to come to an end once you leave the Guard. Instead, you are just getting started.
Earn and Learn
It goes without saying that you are going to be compensated for your work as a Food Service Specialist. In addition to a regular paycheck, as a member of the National Guard you qualify for many educational benefits including tuition assistance. This allows you to better your education as you serve your country.
Training
To get started as a Food Service Specialist, you must go through 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training. This is the same as every other soldier. During this time, you will learn basic soldiering skills ? not much that has to do with your desired industry.
When you move onto your eight weeks of Advanced Individual Training, though, you will begin to focus solely on your upcoming career of Food Service Specialist. You can expect to spend some time with hands on work (in the field) and some time in the classroom.

No matter if you become a Food Service Specialist or follow another career path, you will receive the following benefits:
