In a startling positive move, a large hidden bomb factory was discovered in the area of east Rashid last Monday. The soldiers from the coalition were led to the location by a member of the community, and they were excited to have been able to discover a large caches of weapons and explosives.
Soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry worked to load up and seize the explosives, estimated to be perhaps as much as 4 tons of raw materials, as well as a number of prefabricated home made IED and car bomb type explosives.
Soldiers are always pleased to be able to find large amounts of explosives, because if they can seize and destroy them, then it is just one more amount that will not be used against coalition and American troops.
Members of the different Coalition units have been able to make a solid connection with different members of the community, and it has been a positive connection, one that has borne fruit because of the quality and amount of weapons that have been successfully seized.
Many soldiers have been surprised at the willingness of the citizens to assist. Some soldiers on their 2nd or 3rd Tour of Iraq are amazed at the turn around, many times the citizens were cold and not willing to help on their first tour of duty, but when these soldiers were able to return a 2nd time it was a huge difference.
