If you want to read a truly inspirational and motivational book, Dare to Live Greatly: The Courage to Live a Powerful Christian Life by L.C. Fowler would be a strong recommendation.
This part biography, part look behind the scenes of United States Navy SEAL Training, and wholly engaging book is a must-read. The quotes in the book and the fantastic gold nuggets shared by the author make this a book that will probably be read repeatedly. This reviewer recommends that this book be carried out personally on a day-by-day basis, with highlighted passages reread daily.
The book begins with a young man’s journey and quest to become a prestigious Navy SEAL Frogman. The journey is arduous for this young man and requires physical stamina to meet the high bar of surviving SEAL training in Coronado, CA. However, more in-depth, the trip to achieve his goal involves testing his mental discipline and throwing his heart into completing his goal.
The book is replete with beautiful quotes and Scripture passages that underscore the importance of the message that is being conveyed. Additionally, the author speaks to the reader personally and emphasizes the parallels between becoming a Frogman and enduring life’s challenges for the unique individual.
The author quotes his teammate, “Becoming a Navy SEAL is one of the most selfless acts a man can do since he must be willing to give up everything.” When he speaks of the seasoned trainers committed to making these “tadpoles” into Navy SEALs, he states that at the end of the day, these trainers want the best from the young recruits and the best for them.
Another powerful passage asks the reader, “We should all be starving for something worthwhile. What are you starving for? What are you willing to pay whatever price is necessary?
The book will most certainly inspire, motivate, and encourage the reader. The added impact is the reality of the writer’s experience coupled with his apparent engagement with the principles, thoughts, and ideas that he shares.
Another reader says, “What I like about this book is the number of emotions Fowler is able to transmit, especially when he struggles to do the training while being a good Christian. It feels like he suffered during that time. It’s a short read, but you can learn a lot about the different types of training they do, and with the number of details included, I felt I was prepping myself. This is an excellent informative book about life in the Navy and what to expect of every Navy SEAL trainee.”
Dare to Live Greatly is a fantastic and uplifting memoir and guidebook chronicling a tadpole’s beginnings into a fearless Special Warfare Community. Fowler encourages readers to live a powerful Christian life through the lessons he learned as a Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) trainee in 1977 in Coronado, California. His book is more than a telling of life in the BUD/S training; his book gives others the motivation and insight they need to push forward to thrive beyond life’s fears and comfort zones.
Developing fearless perseverance is only the first lesson in this book, as the author speaks on zeal, faith, and facing the impossible to become a tenacious, wise warrior with absolute resolve to run the race well and finish. Readers will not be able to put this book down! Every page is power-packed with the how-to to become tremendous and thrive!
Fowler gives a fantastic invitation to live a life courageously, expecting more, doing more, and obtaining more than you ever thought possible. This book is one for those who want to do something tremendous yet need the push and inspiration to do so. Readers will discover that a heartfelt attitude of overcoming means just that…to overcome until you win…whatever the cost, and that giving up is not an option, nor is just surviving – TO THRIVE is the goal. His book is a solution to some of life’s most significant obstacles.
Each chapter offers a step-inside peek at the Navy SEAL training program, programmed to break you, and if that’s not enough, his story on what it took for him to graduate and win. He gives life invaluable lessons, as he has learned from experience along the way; each gives a snapshot of the jaw-dropping and grueling training in the Navy Seal training—only the best win. Chapter twenty-six is one of my favorite chapters: When You’re Down to Nothing, God is Up to Something! The author blends the truth of circumstances that can appear to be, yet points readers to a more significant cause, giving immense hope for the breakthrough that only God can bring in these intense life situations—a highly recommended must-read.
The amount of motivation this book contains is spectacularly displayed in the self-disciplinary persistence of this influential Navy Seal character of a young aspiring man and the beautifully pinpointed, stalk-plucked, and inscribed quotes emphasizing the unbreakable, underlying belief he must have to become a dream he poured his heart mind and soul into—The dream that most of us may toss away at the hint of an obstacle. Simply a great book to carry around on your way to whatever you almost gave up on and would still like to accomplish!
An excellent inspirational and motivational read!
