Servicemembers that join the military often are seeking to get their education and sometimes their efforts are a little bit unconventional. The requirements of duty and service in their military jobs often mean that the time and the opportunity to get an education has to come second to their duty. Because of this the United States Federal Government and the Department of Defense worked to create the DANTES program, or Defense Activity For Non Traditional Educational Support. It is a program that helps those Servicemembers who want to serve their county and advance their educational program at the same time.
The educational program that is involved in a non-traditional style program involves being able to be flexible in working your education around your military duty. There are several different ways to do this; you can attend class over the Internet, or via the mail. There are different types of programs that you can participate in through your military education service office that can assist you in setting up one of these types of programs. Some of the methods of delivery vary, you can participate in vocational and educational learning through a number of venues: CD Rom, DVD ROM, Satellite delivery, Internet courses, email, or even traditional print correspondence. The whole DANTES program is set up to help provide information, referral and support to groups and individual Servicemembers who are serving on active duty. There are a number of programs that you can access to earn credit in different ways.

One method is the CLEP testing examination program, or college level exam program. It is a series of exams that are made available through the DANTES and other programs where if a Servicemember wants to, they are able to take a test for college credit. If they have a mastery of the subject and pass the test, then they are awarded the collect credit for that particular course.
CLEP tests are free for eligible members of the Active duty and reserve military. If you are in the military on active duty or in the reserves then you are qualified to take a CLEP test for free. This is a great benefit, for the general public there is a small cost for each CLEP test. If you are charged to take a CLEP test at a particular testing center then you can get reimbursed from the US. Veterans Department.
