Throughout the history of the United States Coast Guard, there have been many advancements in the way that the personnel have been chosen and trained. The point has always been to get the best recruit to the job and train them well. Recently the US Coast Guard has noticed that they need more diversity. Not only is diversity important so that the face of the US Coast Guard is one which is more representative of the men and women of the United States of America. There is also a need to make sure that the people who the US Coast Guard deals with be made to feel as if they are not being singled out in any way. They will see that there is strength in diversity.
Where More Diversity is Needed
While there has been a steady increase in the enlisted personnel of people which represent a minority, there is still a long way to go. Yes, the enlisted personnel ratio is up to 50% for those who are of a minority. The part which is the problem is when you get to the level of O-5 or above, the numbers of minorities drops to 9%.
