There are a lot of different avenues to becoming a teacher, but one that is available to Servicemembers in some situations is the program called Troops To Teachers. It is a program conceived by the Department of Education and the US Department of Defense, to originate a program that would take Veterans with prior active duty military service and train them to become effective schoolteachers. It is a good program, and one that has been reasonably successful for both the education facilities it serves and for Servicemembers who are participants in the Program.
Retirees, and members of the U.S. Military who separate from active duty with an honorable discharge are welcome to apply for the Troops for Teachers program. It is a program to assist Servicemembers who desire to become either private or public school teachers. The overall effort of the program is to assist Servicemembers who either are headed for retirement from active duty or who are transitioning to the reserves to enter into programs that aid them in training and education toward becoming a full fledged schoolteacher. The program gives financial assistance, information, and referral to those who are seeking certification and employment as teachers. Many of the personnel that have participated in the program report that it has been a huge assistance in them eventually becoming teachers.

The experiences and job skills in many different military occupations was realized by those in leadership in both the DoD and the Education Department as having great value in giving personnel the seasoning and experience needed to be good teachers. Experience gained by members of the Armed Forces on Active duty or in the Reserves is applicable to skills in the classroom in many different areas, and the real life experiences are types that prepare students and prior service personnel to become a teacher in ways not always anticipated.
Many state are open to the program and provide some sort of financial assistance or matching funds, and Servicemembers who want to become a teacher are matched by the Department of Education and The Defense Department with School Districts that need teachers. In some cases personnel can become teachers right away if the school district has a dire need, and complete classes to complete a teaching degree.
