The United States Coast Guard is in charge of protecting the waters off the coast of the United States of America. It requires the use of many different vessels and other kinds of machinery to keep the force operational. Maintaining these machines and vessels is a full time responsibility from a rotating staff of trained professionals. Maintaining order in these hectic environments is the responsibility of the engineering officers.
What You Will Do
You will work on shore or aboard some of the larger cutters. You will work with a staff of engineers to make sure that everything is working properly at all times. You will be in charge of making sure that your staff knows what it is doing as well as providing them with everything that they need to succeed while providing the leadership that they need to stay motivated and on task.

Get the Training
In order to be an officer in the US Coast Guard you will have to go through Officer Candidate School. You will also have to go through engineer officer training unless you are going through a promotion to the program. The idea is to make sure that you not only understand how to be an officer in the US Coast Guard, but that you will understand how to lead personnel in an engineering environment as well.
