Enlisted Army Communications Careers

The enlisted specialist in Army Communications is a person that deals with many different types of electronics and communications gear. They deal with equipment used in command and control, and communications between bases and their field units. Serving, as an Army Communications specialist and repair technician is a position that will keep you in the thick of things, every unit, vehicle and detachment in the Army has a need for up to date real time communications. As such you will have an opportunity to venture into the field often in pursuit of making sure that communications and electronic gear is kept in top running order. You will deal with high frequency and occupational radio equipment as well as preventive service and maintenance on radio switching equipment, field telephone, Teletype, computer, radio cryptographic and other types of electronic communications gear.

Individuals who wish to enlist in the Army and pursue Communications and electronic communications repair technician type careers should be able to read and speak English fluently, have normal hearing and vision, and be able to work under a deadline and tolerate stress well. They should have as least basic tool skills, and an ability to pay close attention to detail. You must be able to work with different groups of people close together for long periods of time. You must qualify and pass a background check that will lead to at least a sensitive if not higher security clearance.

In many cases a top-secret clearance is required because of the type of often classified material that a radio operator and Army communications specialist has to deal with. You will use multichannel radio electronics gear, and utilize satellite networks in reliable communications nets, and work to install and maintain smaller communications driven computer networks. High frequency communications will be one of your specialities, and you will work to deal with, install, and maintain a variety of Army related communications gear. You will serve in the middle of the action, as an Army Communications specialist you will be where control and command decisions are often made, affecting many hundreds of lives, it will be your job to make sure that such decisions and commands are able to be successfully transferred to commanders in the field by way of radio communications.

To qualify for an Army Communications Enlisted specialist you have to score a minimum of 100 on the EL portion of the ASVAB test, complete the Air Force Communications systems installer course, be a US Citizen at the time of application, and pass other requirements of an Army Enlisted communications technician.
