Provincial Reconstruction Team Helps With Livestock
Local Farah government officials gathered with local Veterinary officials, and members of the community to aid local farmers and livestock. Coalition Forces assisted them as a number of animals were treated, and the care and proper treatment of animals and livestock demonstrated for local shepherds. These operations took place at a veterinarian capability fair that was held at the coalition Farah Fire Base.
The Coalition Civil Affairs team that is located at the Fire Base Farah set up the veterinarian fair and hosted the entire event. The provincial Afghan veterinarian, Dr. Gulam was on hand to coordinate and organize the activities, as well as sending out messengers into the surrounding countryside to invite ranchers and farmers with sick animals to attend the event. The supplies and volunteers for the event were supplied by CTF-101 soldiers and coalition troops from the Provincial Reconstruction team medical personnel.

The event was posted on the local radio station in the form of messages advertising the event. “We are working to treat animals as there has not been very many VETCAP operations in this region, and because the need is great,” said the coalition civil affairs team medic.
“Normally the animals do not receive very much in the way of medical or vet treatment, so this is a positive thing for the whole region,” said the Coalition Medic.
All the animals that were screened were treated for worms, and two of the very sickest were administered antibiotics by Dr. Gulam who arranged to have them brought back for follow up treatment. Dr. Gulam also instructed ranchers and farmers how to give de-worming medicine to their herds themselves.
