Concerned Citizens Slam Door On Insurgents
One of the best improvements in Iraq is the involvement of the citizens in the efforts to protect their country. The local citizens have became much more involved, including their efforts to report suspicious activities, and their service in organizations such as the Sons and Daughters of Iraq, and other civilian militias and civilian patriotic groups.
Recently near Hawr Rajab there was some mortar activity that suddenly occurred, and at first it was not obvious where the enemy gunfire was coming from. Suddenly a local Iraqi man approached the coalition unit that was under fire, and said that he knew that the mortar shells were coming from a small farmhouse nearby.
He showed soldiers where it was, and they were able to swarm and arrest 4 insurgents, that were using two different mortar tubes to fire on the Iraqi and coalition checkpoint.

This was another example of how concerned citizens are able to assist and help the Iraqi Security forces in a huge way. It is by their help and information that many situations are either avoided, or made better by the ability to deal with insurgents immediately, without having to wait for information. Citizens are becoming very reliable sources of accurate, timely and up to date information, often without having to be asked they are coming forward and giving information to the coalition, and to their own Iraqi Army members.
