Service with the United States military entitles a Veteran to a number of benefits, many of which are well known. But if you have served more than 180 days on active duty service and qualify as a veteran, then you will be able to access and participate in the VA Loan home mortgage program. There are a number of services and benefits available for veterans that qualify. If you are a qualified person under the VA rules and a Veteran of military service then you are able to apply for the Home Loan VA program.
The Veterans Administration offers home loan benefits to the qualified Veteran that can be used with any mortgage lender, or any lender that participates in the VA home loan program. This is true for most lenders, as the VA tries to work with any reasonably qualified lender to make sure that the program is as accessible as they are able to make it for VA Servicemembers. As a veteran of one of the five Armed services in the United States Military you can use the benefits to work on, remodel, refinance or fund an initial home purchase. This is a benefit that is known to the general public but one that is reserved strictly for former US Servicemembers. The first step to participation in the loan program is to obtain and complete a VA form 26-1880, which is the loan program eligibility request form. It is sent electronically to the VA, and in a very simple process you are either confirmed or rejected based on your Veterans eligibility. A copy of your DD 214 discharge papers will suffice for a proof of service, and once your eligibility certificate is verified, and you provide a proof of service, then you are ready to approach a lender for an application to participate in the loan program. While it is sometimes possible to proceed without a proof of veterans service (like the DD-214) this tends to take up to several weeks, if you have a copy of your DD 214 available then you can proceed more swiftly.

Electronic Verification- With the advent of electronic verification it is sometimes possible for all of the verification to be handled by your lender. This makes the process a lot easier, and can simplify things considerably. It is referred to as an automated certificate eligibility, or ACE, and some lenders are very adept at this process and can literally have you approved for the program and into your first home loan in a matter of a few days.
