Iraqi Elections To Be Held Next Year
The Najaf elections have been hosting United Nations Inspectors over the last ten days, showing their setup for the election next year. Representatives of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq have been visiting different sites in Iraq.
The UN inspection team is a 10 person team which was in Iraq on a surprise visit to make sure that voter registration sites were being ran without any problems.
The report from the UN inspection team was generally favorable, and they reported that the registration voter site were being maintained excellently, and that overall security measures seem to be such that a safe environment will be maintained.
?Everything appears to be in good order, and they have done a good job setting up fair registration and election procedures.
The Iraqi Army and National police have been working hard to establish the voting facilities, based on international standards. The elections held next year would help take Iraq forward into the next decade, so the choices that the people of Iraq make democratically are very important.
Since the new voting registration centers have been established there has already been more people that have newly registered than the number of people total that voted in their last election.
Efforts on the voting facilities and registration centers started in early April including training registration and election officials and helping new voters to register.
