There are three options for Servicemembers who serve in the Guard or Active Reserves.
Montgomery GI Bill- Chapter 30 Active Duty- If as a selected reservist you serve more than 24 months on active duty you are eligible for selected benefits under the MGIB active duty program. This is a change, Congress and the President worked to change this to support Servicemembers who were called to active service. Second is the Reserve Education Assistance Program- This is a supplemental education funding for Reservists, and can provide up to 80 percent of the GI active duty rates. And the third method is the largest; the Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve- This is one of the main funding sources available with the MGIB. It is for active members of the selected reserve.
The Montgomery GI Bill for the Selected Reserve is very lucrative, and works out well for many Reservists. Qualifying is not as hard as it may seem, you have to have a high school diploma, earned before you do your initial duty for training. You have to agree to enlist for a six-year period following your training and initial duty training assignment. And you have to be assigned to a reserve unit that is currently active in the select reserves. That’s it; if you qualify under these conditions then you are qualified for the features of the MGIB Selected reserve. You can use your funding under the Montgomery GI bill for a variety of different programs including the following: certification testing, distance learning, college, technical or university courses, apprenticeship programs or job training, or even flight training. Most colleges and universities in the United States qualify for funding with the Veterans Administration,
