The world is a big place and it is necessary to get the United States Navy anywhere on the planet as quickly as possible. This means keeping the vessels at sea far from home for extended periods of time. By staying far away from their home ports for so long, it makes it very difficult to simply pick up some gas at the local filling station. Instead, it is necessary to have a power plant which will provide all of the energy which will be necessary to power these massive vessels for extended periods of time. This is why nuclear energy is used.
Watching the health of the sailors
Because nuclear power is used on so many of the vessels, it is necessary to have an expert on board who will be able to check the sailors to make sure that they are not getting sick from working closely with the materials. Those working in radiation health are responsible for checking the crew daily to make sure that they are safe in their work conditions.
