The military has a number of different Montgomery GI bill benefits that are available for Servicemembers. The program and access has been made easier over the last several years. There is a program to help increase the amount of money that is available to Servicemembers, it is called the Top Up Program, and it exists to specifically help supplement the funds that are made available for tuition and fees. The amount of money that a Servicemember can access is increased by the funding amount not normally covered by some of the other types of programs or benefits. It?s a good idea to get a college selected that has a VA or Veteran Affairs program that is approved. To be honest, most colleges and universities in the United States have approved programs, but it?s a good idea to check first and be sure.
You can verify if your school that you have selected applied very easy by simply checking on the Internet or contacting the school directly. After you select a university or school that is on the approved VA list, one of the next steps is to contact your command and make sure that you can apply for the top up program. You just need to be on active duty, and be a normal MGIB bill participant, with at least 24 months of consecutive serve. The Top up program makes it so your MGIB benefits are increased substantially, and this allows you to increase how much you eventually can get from the MGIB program. The total amount that is available from either the MGIB top up program or tuition assistance cannot equal more than the cost of the course that you want to take while you are on active duty. If it does, then your eventual GI benefits may experience a slight amount, but its not a big deal. If you are on active duty and pursuing a degree, in addition to the Tuition Assistance program, the Active Duty Top up benefit program is a great way to pay for your education. The Top up program is not available for members of the selected reserves or general reserve personnel. It is an excellent plan to use if you are trying to complete your education while on active duty, or even if you just want to pursue a single program, or a few programs while on active duty.

The Top up Program is a great deal if you are an Active Duty Servicemember pursuing a degree program and you do not want to continue your education after active duty, or if you will be completing your education while you are on active duty. It is also a valuable program if you only want to take a few programs while on Active duty.
