NW Baghdad Works Toward Normalcy
There have been a number of different projects that have worked to provide light and electric power for the streets of Baghdad. But one of the most ambitious and successful projects has been the solar powered Street light project.
In several different neighborhoods across Iraq in particular Ghazaliyah, there have been installed new solar powered lighting that is serving the community well.
In neighborhoods and communities, the solar powered lighting has been successful because of its independence from the electric grid. More than 16,000 different solar powered lights have been planned, and about half of them have been installed, with the other half set for installation over the next six months.
The areas that have the lights already, the benefits have been very apparent. The rate of crime has plummeted in the areas lit by the new solar lights, and the lights were present during the holy month of Ramadan.
Most of the residents stay indoors during the daytime, and the light provide a safe environment for the people to do their business after dark.
If not for the lights, many areas would be pitch black and it would allow a great deal of crime and even insurgent activity. But because of the new solar lights, the community is able to move about and it has worked to create a safer, more secure region.
