Adhamiyah, Iraq-With a rush of fanfare, recently two boxers began a friendly bout in the new reopened sports center in Adhamiyah. The Adhamiyah Sports Complex was completed and reopened on January 27th.
It was the beneficiary of a facelift that ran to the tune of nearly $20,000 dollars, funded by the Coalition and the U.S. Unit Commanders Emergency Relief Fund, used to help rebuild and reconstruct various facilities in Iraq.
The complex has a remodeled gym that can now be used for boxing, an indoor basketball court and soccer field, a FIFA regulation Astroturf soccer field, as well as administration offices and other features.
Part of the donations to help equip the new remodeled sports complex has been a donation from USA Boxing. They contributed gloves, shirts trunks and boxing gear. The head of the Iraqi Boxing program is a Two time Iraqi Olympian named Frank Changchun.
Changchun competed in the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games, and will put the gear to good use in training younger boxers to compete in International competitions for Iraq. ?We are happy to receive the help and assistance and we are thankful to USA Boxing for their donation and generous support,? said Changchun.
