A member of the Field Artillery Army fire team, the Tactical Air Defense Operations Specialist is part of the artillery early warning system. As a Tactical Air Defense Operations Specialist you will be responsible to identify track and detect aircraft, to broadcast information and early warning material, and act as an operations and intelligence gatherer for your Air Defense Unit. Artillery are weapons that fire missiles or large bore ammunition to support tanks, and infantry on the battlefield. Working as an Air Defense and Tactical operations specialist you will be responsible to supervise and operate equipment in support of early warning systems.
Air Defense and Tactical Operations specialists have to have good physical stamina, and be able to sit at their post for long periods of time without rest. They are required to have normal hearing and vision, and must not be color blind in any way as they have to be able to decipher and read color-coded charts, maps and information.
The job of Air Defense and Tactical Operations specialist is highly specialized, and requires a lot of training. You will start with Basic Combat training for nine weeks where you will learn about the Army, its mission and how to be a soldier. Then, you will progress to additional individual advanced training. You will learn in both simulated battle conditions and in the classroom, and receive training, which will enable you to function as a Tactical Air Defense Operations specialist.

Specific Job Training for Army Tactical Air Defense Operations Specialist takes place over 19 weeks of individual advanced training. You will learn tactics, artillery methods, methods of manual and computer target location, and how to handle various artillery ammunition. You will be certified as a regular member of an Army Field Artillery team, with special focus on early detection and warning systems. If you can remain calm during stressful situations, and work well as a team member, and if you enjoy having a wide variety of job related duties then the position of Army Tactical Air Defense Operations specialist may be the job for you.
Other duties you may work and perform include operating radio nets and communications, passing along classified information, keeping inventory and at times upon orders destroying classified material, and other security and classified functions and operations.
